How much does car detailing cost in the UK? (2026 price guide)
Published 11 June 2026 · By SB Detailers, Leighton Buzzard
"How much does car detailing cost?" is the first question almost every customer asks us. The honest answer is: it depends on the size of your vehicle, the condition of the paintwork, and which service you actually need — a quick maintenance wash and a full two stage paint correction are very different jobs.
This guide breaks down typical UK car detailing prices in 2026, what drives the cost, and when paying more for a professional ceramic coating is genuinely worth it over a standard valet.
Typical UK car detailing prices in 2026
| Service | Typical price | What's included |
|---|---|---|
| Maintenance wash | £40 – £80 | Safe contact wash, wheels, tyres dressed. |
| Full exterior detail | £120 – £250 | Decontamination, clay, sealant or wax. |
| Deep interior detail | £150 – £300 | Shampoo, extraction, steam, odour treatment. |
| New car protection + ceramic coating | £400 – £700 | Decon, light polish, 5-year ceramic. |
| Single stage paint correction + ceramic | £525 – £800 | Removes 60–80% of defects. |
| Two stage paint correction + ceramic | £625 – £1,200+ | Show-finish, 85–95% defect removal. |
Prices are typical UK market ranges for a small-to-medium family car. Larger vehicles (SUVs, 4x4s, vans) sit at the upper end. See our own services and pricing for SB Detailers' exact rates.
What actually drives the price
- Vehicle size. A Polo and an X5 are not the same job. Larger panels mean more product, more pad changes and more correction time — typically 20–40% more than a small hatchback.
- Paint condition. Heavily swirled, scratched or neglected paint needs a more aggressive cut stage, and sometimes paint thickness readings to work safely. Daily-driven cars usually need more correction than a low-mileage weekend car.
- Correction level. A single stage polish removes 60–80% of light defects; a two stage cut-and-refine removes 85–95% and produces a near show-finish. The second stage roughly adds £100–£300 in labour.
- Coating tier. A solid 5-year professional ceramic coating sits around £150–£300 of the total. Longer-life (7–10 year) coatings add more, and graphene or premium-tier systems more again.
- Interior included?. A standalone deep interior detail is usually £150–£300. Bundled with paintwork, the labour overlaps so the combined price is lower than booking them separately.
Detailing vs valeting — what's the real difference?
A valet is a clean. A detail is a restoration. A £25 hand wash will make your car look better on the day, but it doesn't address swirl marks, bonded contamination, or long-term protection. Professional detailing uses paint depth gauges, dual-action machine polishers, dedicated compounds and a controlled indoor environment — the kind of work that permanently improves the surface rather than masking it.
Is a ceramic coating worth it long term?
For most owners, yes. A quality 5-year ceramic coating costs less per year than a monthly wax program, dramatically reduces wash time, protects against UV fade, bird etching and road salt, and keeps resale value higher. On a newer car, pairing it with paint correction locks in the factory finish before daily driving wears it down.
Where it stops making sense is on a car you intend to sell within 12 months, or on heavily damaged paint where the realistic next step is a respray rather than correction.
