Paint Protection
Ceramic coating vs wax — which is actually better?
Published 11 June 2026 · By SB Detailers, Leighton Buzzard
Wax has been around for decades. Ceramic coatings are the modern answer to the same problem — keep paint glossy, protected and easy to clean. They're not the same product, they don't last the same time, and they don't cost the same. Here's the honest comparison.
| Property | Wax / Sealant | Ceramic Coating |
|---|---|---|
| Durability | 2–3 months | 3–7+ years |
| Gloss | Warm, deep | Sharp, glassy |
| Chemical resistance | Low | High |
| UV protection | Limited | Excellent |
| Hydrophobic | Yes (short term) | Yes (years) |
| Cost (pro applied) | £40–£120 | £400–£1,200 |
| Wash time | Normal | 50% faster |
When wax still makes sense
Show cars, weekend cars, or owners who genuinely enjoy hand-detailing every few months. A premium carnauba wax gives a warmth that ceramics can't quite replicate, and the low upfront cost makes it ideal if you plan to sell within 12 months.
When a ceramic coating is the obvious win
- Brand new car — lock in factory finish before daily wear sets in.
- Daily driver — far less time washing, no monthly re-waxing.
- Black or dark paint — much harder to swirl during washing.
- Long-term ownership — cost per year is lower than wax.
Our recommendation
For 90% of customers we coat for, a professional 5-year ceramic on properly prepped paint is the right call. Pair it with paint correction on used cars, or new car protection on a fresh delivery — then maintain with pH-neutral washes only.
